Markdal rally 2008… winning my first prize!

Today I was awarded my first prize for the two speeder! With my mate Alwin I attended the 15th VMC Markdaltoertocht. This was an oldtimer rally for both vintage, veteran as classic bikes. Overall there were over a 100 entries! After some initial rain the sky cleared and we had a very pleasant ride with stops at a bird rescue centre and a car oldtimer event.

The Scott went pretty well though still running rich. And my renewed kickstarter only worked once (when I rolled the bike out of the garage)… During the frequent restarts on the rally I had to bump start it every time as the kickstarter simply lacks enough momentum to turn the engine over properly. Maybe I should install an operating lever for the half compression valves to make it easier for the engine to turn over when starting…

Almost at the end of the rally my rear chain decided it was time to take a walk. I simply lost the connecting link and with that the whole chain. It was a brand new connection link and it was installed the proper way so I do not know what happened! Luckily I brought a spare and we could continue after a short while.

At the end some prizes were awarded. And to my great surprise my Scott received one for being the most interesting two stroke bike present. The judges said there was no discussion about the winner of this award although there was some stiff competition in the form of two very rare DKW NZ500 motorcycles (also a watercooled twin)! The award was a very nice casting of a racing motorcycle.

Of course this rally gave me a new list of things to do on the Scott (will it ever end…)

  • cure the richness in the carburetion. The bike accelerates quite good but once on a steady speed it starts to fourstroke. With petrol usage being 1 litre for 12,5 km the bike simply must be to rich. I think the pilot jet is too large as well as the main jet.
  • fit a much smaller jet in the oil tap to the two speed gear as this was overoiled a lot
  • fit a lever to operate the half compression valves. Maybe this will enable me to finally start the bike with the kickstarter
  • make a new two speed gear undertray as the one fitted does catch the excess oil but does not keep it in…
  • fit the sideshields as quickly as possible to keep the bike cleaner

So a lot to do again! To be continued…
